Rooibos is the first product to be Rainforest Alliance certified in South Africa. The purpose of the workshop was to interpret specific criteria of the SAN Standards in the light of local context including South African legislation, spatial development planning tools like the Biodiversity Sector Plans developed for the Western Cape, socio-economic considerations and conservation programmes. More workshops will follow and it is expected that the final Interpretation Guidelines will be finalized in 2012. The workshop was well attended by Rooibos Industry representatives including producers, non-government organizations and government officials.
